What does BLK mean in basketball?

Getting a hand on a shot after release and before it starts to fall. Touching it on the way down is goaltending, not a block.

They drive, you pin it on the glass from behind: one block, and their attempt still counts as an FGA with no FGM.
What it leaves out
Neither blocks nor steals measure defense. The best defense stops the shot or the pass from happening at all, and nothing that did not happen shows up in a column.
