What does AST mean in basketball?

The pass that leads directly to a teammate scoring. A dribble in between is allowed, but the more dribbles there are the less likely a scorer credits it.

You hit the corner and they shoot it straight in: one assist. If they instead take five dribbles, beat two defenders and finish, most scorers will not give it to you.
What it leaves out
It is a judgment call, and scorers apply it differently from league to league, which makes cross-competition comparisons shakier than they look.
