What does PACE mean in basketball?

Possessions per game, normalised to a standard length: 40 minutes under FIBA and 48 in the NBA. The two leagues’ pace numbers therefore cannot be read against each other.

Seventy-eight point eight possessions across 40 minutes is a pace of 78.8. Under the FIBA 24-second clock, 70 to 80 is the usual band.
What it leaves out
Fast is not better or worse; it only inflates or deflates every counting stat. Before crediting a high-scoring team, check its pace.
