TS%

What does TS% mean in basketball?

真实命中率True shooting percentage

Folds twos, threes and free throws into one efficiency, which makes it the most complete single number for scoring. The 0.44 estimates how many free-throw attempts actually ended a possession; it is an approximation, not an exact figure.

How it is worked out

PTS ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA))

Worked through

Twenty-five points on 15 shots and eight free throws: 25 ÷ (2 × (15 + 0.44 × 8)) = 25 ÷ 37.04 = 67.5%, which is a genuinely efficient night.

Rough scale

Around 55% is typical and anything past 60 is genuinely efficient. That is the FIBA and EuroLeague line; the NBA runs about three points higher.

What it leaves out

Efficient does not mean they should shoot more. A high TS% at low usage does not always survive being handed the ball, so read it next to USG%.

One term down, the whole sheet to go

The numbers on a sheet lean on each other. How many free throws appear depends on the team foul count; how many rebounds exist depends on how both teams shot. Reading a whole game means reading them together.
